The fuel pump either works or it doesn't, so if it does start, the pump sounds good. Plus, your car isn't that old to start looking at the fuel pump yet. Past that, can't help you; Don't know the Toyota engines.
you could very well have a dirty fuel filter, that's where i would start. something is restricting the flow whether it be a dirty filter, injectors, or something to do w/ the pump or even relay. like you said your power supply is fine. good luck!
Corolla vehicles are known for this condition. It is a product of drive by wire throttle. If the engine shuts off and stops rotating in just the right spot the spent gases from the exhaust and combustion chambers will fill the intake manifold with dead non combustible gas. If the car is parked for a medium length of time (20 minutes) it will crank over longer before eventually starting The idle circuit is so small on this car that it will not bring in enough fresh oxygen (air) to start the car right away. It will never actually strand you but will crank over and over sometimes and give you a bad feeling.
In really damp cold weather (very very rarely) the car will inject too much fuel and no air and will flood the engine. If this happens just hold your foot on the floor when cranking the engine. This shuts off the fuel and gives it a whole pile of air which will normally overcome the flooding condition.
You have the right idea by opening the throttle a little when you first start cranking the car. This will give it the air it needs to start. Just flip the throttle lightly when you turn the key and then let the peddle return to normal. It will start every time with no delay.
