It always amazes me how many people have nothing better to do then give two word answers.































A Matrix is based on a Corolla platform which is well known to be one of the best built small cars.















They are simple and very reliable cars. For those that seem to hate imports a Pontiac Vibe is also a Matrix and it has one of the best reputations of all GM branded cars.































Now the bad. In 1998 Toyota brought out new engine in these cars and the early models had issues with oil consumption. This was fixed in short order but I would avoid 1998 MY vehicles if you can. Most were never a problem but why chance it.

There not too bad but if buying used since you did ask about older models i would say that their reliability is good, the car value holds good and the mpg is great. My parents bought a used 2005 toyota matrix XR in 07 and have loved it so far and have had no complains about it. Its basically a corolla with a hatch.
