How important is a differential lock on a 4wd Tacoma?

Default How important is a differential lock on a 4wd Tacoma?
I have a 2001 Tacoma 2.7L, 5 speed. I noticed a button with a built in LED light, to the left of the steering wheel, it is not attached to anything, discovered this is probably if you add a differential lock. I'm looking for travel in some deep sand, and through occasional mud in forest roads, but nothing extreme. Will the granny gears be enough, or should I rush headlong to some shop, wallet in hand? Also, I see from some research here that the lock can be hazardous to the drive train if not used carefully...

Diff lock is helpful in deep stuff but makes it hard to turn. It is not a big deal.















I have it on my 02 and never use it.
