Maybe they were not working before you plugged it in
1. Remove bulbs and test
2.When you push down on your brake pedal there is a switch that goes on .Get down into the brake pedal area,find the switch that's activated by the brake pedal going down.Pull off the electrical terminals and connect the terminals together(a split pin is good for this) thus bypassing the switch.
Your brake lights should now come on if bulbs are good ,this proves the switch is faulty and is easy to replace.
I dont think brake lights have a relay
