Default My husband went through a huge puddle the other night and now our 2004 toyota's check...
...engine light is flashing? And the car shakes. What could be the problem.

No one will know until you take the vehicle to an auto parts store where they will look at the codes and give you the reason(s) for the check engine light being on

There are several things that could happen and cause the effects you're getting from running through water... Go to Autozone and ask them to "pull" a code. It's free and will help pinpoint what the problem is and give you an idea how to fix it.

I would think anyone that has been driving for awhile would know this by now! your distributor cap is probably old and dont have a good seal anymore. the cap is the thing that all your spark plug wires are coming from, a rotor turns and distibutes the spark to each cylinder. if theres water in it the spark will ground out before it gets to the sparkplug, which will cause a missfire, and rough running, and possibly set off the check engine light. I would suggest buying a new cap an rotor cause they probably need replaced anyway! If not just pull the cap off and dry everything with a towel and disconnect the possitive battery terminal for a few mins to give the ecu time to reset. hope this helps ya!

A flashing MIL on an OBDII ('96 and newer) vehicle means only 1 thing and that is a catalyst damaging misfire. Part of the catalytic converter's job is to "burn off" any unburnt fuel and carbon monoxide that makes it through the engine. If you have a misfire it will try to burn off too much unburnt fuel, overheat, melt down internally, and plug up.































Your misfire is because something ignition related got wet. You need to dry out everything ignition related such as coils, plug wires, etc. Being an '04 it might be water down in the tubes that the spark plugs are in.
