corolla has a simple cheap engine/belt is it and if you are replacing the belt make sure you replace the w/pump and idler pulley/new stuff will alter the wear pattern and they will quickley fail requiring the same labor charges

The 2002 has a chain, I have worked on this motor ever scene it came out.















The big thing is the chain tensioner leaks oil down the back of the motor but wont hurt the operation just annoying leak.















Just look at the front of the motor and you will see it is metal not plastic like a belt motor is.

That car has a chain. Corollas haven't had a timing belt since 1997. My 1999 even had a timing chain and it's the same car as an '02. Bottom line: You have the 1ZZFE engine. They never made the 1ZZFE with a timing belt.
