My 2004 Prius has cost 12 cents per mile for dealer maintenance, tires, and gas combined over the 115,000 miles I've driven it so far according to the logbook I keep. The 2011 Prius has the potential to be even more thrifty. Old fashioned cars just can't compete unless they are very, very small and even then they fall short. Based on the very high owner satisfaction ratings my experience isn't unique.
I also have a 2001 that my wife drives. It's been trouble-free too but she doesn't keep a logbook so I don't have exact amounts. Rough estimate is that it's similar. The Prius is highly reliable.
The Prius is a mid-sized car, so naturally if you compare it to some sub-compact it's going to be more expensive to purchase, duh. The only people I hear complaining about them are those who don't have them. Sour grapes, I guess.
It's also a lot of fun to drive. I still have a smile on my face every time I get in.
