Default What engines would fit a 1981 Toyota Corolla coupe 1.8 liters?
Alright I'm hoping to buy a new engine for a toyota corolla shell and I'm wondering what kind of engine would fit? or would all engines fit? I'm looking for a strong engine too because I'm hoping to keep this car for a while and working on it so answer accordingly please?

Technically you can put any engine you want in it, although i wouldn't recommend it.































If you put a 4.6 liter V8 in it and didn't change anything (minus getting the engine to fit and run) as soon as you took off, the car would move with so much force that your suspension would snap and/or your chassis would split into two pieces if you didn't do any fabrication to it.































I'd put a MR2 motor in it though.































I'm also assuming youre using the car to race/drag because it wasn't mentioned in your post.

I have to agree with the last answer. Have you ever heard of the 1985-87 Corolla GT-S aka "AE86"? That car has the 4A-GE twincam engine- which is the same engine used in the 1985-89 MR2. It is good for 115-130 hp-depending on which year 4A-GE you get. Amazing thing is that while other Corolas went front-wheel drive in 1984, the sports coupe, AE86 actually retained the old chassis- which is the chassis that your 1981 Corolla has. You could even go with the supercharged version of that engine (called the 4A-GZE) which was used on the 1988-89 MR2 S/C. That's good for 170 hp before any mods. You have a great chassis so have fun with it.

Chevy LS-type V8 or the classic 1955 - 2002 Chevy smallblock. Slide a late-model Ranger rear axle under the back to deal with the extra power.
