09 Toyota Corolla GPH?

How can you accurately figure out MPG if you don't take idle time into account? My '09 Corolla S has a gauge that keeps track of MPG but I've been keeping track of my MPG on a spreadsheet as well. The gauge number is always a little higher than the number I calculate because it doesn't take idle time into account. My questions is, why would Toyota ignore this when programming their gauge? Also, how do I figure out what the GPH (gallons per hour) is for my car? That is, the amount of fuel consumption when the car is idling? Thanks!

MPG is miles per gallon. Normally, the idling time should not be considered. It is comparing how far a car can travel on each gallon. So, if your car is idling, you are not moving and you are not covering any distance.

Moreover, your consumption when on idling is quite minimal (if you dont keep idling for 5hrs!!!!)

have you checked the gauge while idling? sometimes mine reads 99.9 mpg while idling...I take that to mean not much is being used...or at least not enough to worry about.

Toyota lies about its mpg gauge because they think people are uneducated enough to do what you have done...actually check it. By installing an mpg gauge which is reading falsely, indicating higher mpg that the Corolla is actually getting benefits Toyota in that it can claim its cars have high mileage when they really don't. And if you claim the mpg gauge is wrong...Toyota will do what it does best. Deny it.
