Acceleration problem with Celica VVTI?
Over the past week in particular I noticed when I first start driving my Toyota Celica from turning it on. It seemed a bit laggish when I put my foot on the accelerator. The best way to describe this: when I accelerate, the rev bar goes up, the engine revs, but the car doesn't pick up any speed. Well it does if i very slowly press the accelerator and to do so I find I have to drive in a higher gear for it catch on. Today was the worst as I had my mum and brother in the car and it had been fine until I got onto dual carrigaeway where I sped up to join onto it, I was only doing roughly 65mph as it wouldnt go any faster and the rev meter was at 6-7k rpm and this was in 6th gear. Smoke was coming from under the bonnet so I pulled over opened it up and let it cool down, added some more oil to the oil bit. It got going again as usual and got me to where I was going and back. But it has started again when I went out again.
The Celica is a Gen 7, 2001 registration, 140 bhp with 105,000 miles on the clock.
The car has been fine since I bought it last April. I also noticed when I turn it on, it makes quite a noise considering it isn't moving, the rev meter is reading near enough 2000 rpm whilst in neutral. It has had every service to date, I'm well aware of its high mileage.
Now I before writing this I have done my own research to find out what it is. Some people say it is the clutch that is going which does seem right as I had a clutch go on a moped in my teen years and it felt similar until it stopped completly. I have also read that it could be an air intake problem, or the acceleration cable itself getting caught or even the lambda sensor fault.
I know how cars work but I dont particularly trust myself to repair it. So some price quotes would be very usefull for the problems mentioned.
Thanks
