* properly inflate the tires.
* narrowest, mildest street tires that you can find that fit.
* if manual transmission, up-shift very early (like 1200 rpm), and once in top gear, accelerate with your foot to the floor until reaching cruising speed.
* drive slower.
* if automatic transmission, accelerate very gently.
* avoid A/C
* keep your windows closed.
* bed cover - opening the tail gate does not help; a complete bed cover is worth 10% or more increase in fuel economy at 55 mph.
* keep pressure on the accelerator constant - do not tap your foot.
* anticipate stops - if traffic light changes from green to red ahead of you, immediately coast, same when you see stop signs.
* plan your route to avoid stopping.
* coast more.
* use your brakes less. Brakes convert kinetic energy into heat. Your engine converts fuel into kinetic energy. Every time you use your brakes, you are giving away fuel.
* follow, don't lead.
