In an automatic transmission with 4 ratios, the "L" is the lowest (#1) ratio; when selected, the transmission stays in #1. Useful for driving slowly over obstacles or down slippery hills such as grass-covered hills. "2" means the transmission starts in "L" and then changes automatically to the #2 ratio; a similar sequence happens when you select "3": it starts in "L" then changes automatically to the #2 ratio, and then changes automatically to the #3 ratio. "3" is useful going up or down steep paved hills. "D" starts in "L" then changes automatically to the #2 ratio, then progresses through #3 and last to #4 which is the "D" or "Drive" ratio. "D" is useful for travelling at speed on flat paved surfaces. Most of the time you will just use "D" and ignore the others. In deep snow, you might drive carefully in "L", and then change to "D" when you're clear of the deep stuff.
