I have 2 Tacomas, one 4wd and one 2wd, both 5speed. The 2wd gets much better milleage, about 25mpg in the city, the 4wd gets about 20mpg. The 4wd will not stop any better in the snow/ice than 2wd, which would be where most accidents would happen. I had the 2wd in Colorado in a fresh 5" snow and had only slight problems getting traction-it snowed overnite while I was at motel...I got around pretty good in the mountains driving carefully. Also to consider is that Toyota improved the rust resistance beginning with the 2001 year- you could check this out by looking under each truck. The 4wd has a bit more maintenance. If I could have only one, I would have to take the 2wd.
