get the MR2. despite their small engine displacement, any car with a rotary engine like the RX-7 will eat a decent bit of gas(and oil). the old RX-7's really didn't have long lifespans either, i've seen them have serious engine issues shortly after hitting only 100k.
the MR2 is just a generally better car. it has about the same horsepower, but the mid-engined platform allows for much better handling. they also get pretty good mpg considering the engine size and the curb weight. since the engine sits on top of the drive-wheels(unlike the RX-7), it also has better traction in snow/ice if you get bad weather in winter. older Toyotas in general are really reliable cars, i think you'd be a lot better off with it.
