The Prius fulfills a need that marketers and advertisers have created.
The technology is at least 30 years old. Mother Earth News ran several stories back in the 1970's about someone who built his own hybrid that even used regenerative braking to help charge the batteries when braking.
If I remember correctly, it was an Opel GT and the builder was getting about 75 mpg.
Of course, just like today's "Green" vehicles, it wasn't practical for anyone who needed to carry anything , like groceries or your kids.
The whole auto "Green" thing is a marketing scam to fool gullible consumers into thinking they're doing something for the environment by spending money.
As for the plug-in electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt, where does the electricity come from?
Mostly Coal-fired power plants.
And I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but why is it that most of the time when I see a Prius (or any of the other environmentally "friendly" cars) they're always going about 80 mph and passing me in my 1993 4WD Geo Tracker that's still getting 25-29 mpg (that can also pull a trailer)?
I guess their money has paid for the right to drive in a fuel-INefficient manner.
