key fob dash slot in the 3G prius?

G3 Prius.....if the smart entry/smart start system doesnt work, how do I start the car after opening the door with the mechanical key in the fob?

3G (3rd gen) is too vague. There have been 4 Prius models so far, NHW10, NHW11, NHW20, and ZVW30 so which are you referring to as the third?

For the NHW20 there is a slot in the dash for the fob.

For the ZVW30 you hold the fob up next to the power button while you power on the car.

Both are only necessary for direct passive RFID in case the FOB battery is dead or SKS is turned off.

You put the fob in the slot on the dash (assuming 2004-2009). The slot doesn't need the battery in the fob to be working. However, check to see if the SS/SE hasn't been turned off by the button on the lower dash to the right of the steering wheel.

The 2010/11 Prius doesn't have a slot for the key fob.

If the battery dies in the key fob, you unlock the door with the mechanical key (just like the gen II), then touch the key fob to the power switch. After the alarm sounds, you then have 10 seconds to press the power switch (while pressing down on the brake pedal) to start the car.
