it all depends on what you want. If you leave a vehicle the factory color, you do not have to paint every nook and cranny. The door jambs are usually fine, and the trunk and hood are out of the sun for the most part. So less preparation work means you save money. The thing with painting is its 90 percent preparation and 10 percent painting, but the right prep work is critical. Also, using a good top of the line paint.
Look over any cracked or broken trim pieces, or headlight or taillight chrome bezels. anything chromed, that is cracked or scratched will look even worse next to fresh paint. So fix them ahead of time. Ask friends and family if they have used any local shops, I have nothing against Maaco, however, their cheapest paint jobs, use cheap paint and the vehicle will look like crap in 18 months or so. Just make sure you get a good quality paint, because it adds years to the outside look. Take your time, find a shop that is putting out some nice quality work, I have been known to go down to a particular shop and spend an hour or more checking out the finished cars, and explaining what im doing. (trying to make up my mind to get a paint job!!!) IF THERE is no or only minor body work, you should be able to paint a vehicle for 600 to 800 bucks. Even small dings get magnified, so plan on an hour or two to finnish a bit of body work.
