17/22 MPG that's pretty bad for a 4.0L V6, I mean come on they make full-size pickups with better gas mileage than this. Where's the innovation?

It is a bigger engine which require more fuel as well as heavier vehicle.

Maybe but fgull size pick ups weigh not nearly what a 4-runner does. This year or last they went to all 6 cylinder 4-runners again and it has plenty or power also. It is full size and as big if not bigger than say the Tundra. Does a full siz explorer with the closest to the pwer of the 4-runner get any better? No worse at 15/18, Tahoe-no, Navigator-No and Pathfinder=no too so it g4ets better than top selling SUV's on market. The innovation is safety also as the footprint is widest of all.

Well, the 5th Generation 4Runner is more designed as an off road vehicle. It's not designed to be the economical mid-sized SUV/Crossover. If you wanted better gas mileage, then you should look at the Highlander, which is not designed for off road and is designed to tote lots of stuff around town and has a mileage of 18/24 for a 3.5 L V6 engine. The innovation is not just mileage, as the 4Runner has a bunch of off road accessories and the fact that the vehicle is designed to give enough power to get out of sticky situations instead of being economical.
