Default I am considering buying a 1997-2001 camry?
I am seriously considering buying a 1997-2001 toyota camry. I want to get the 4 cylinder, automatic as they are easier to work on and I am very mechanically inclined. I just want to know the opinion of the current owners and what trouble areas do these cars have. What should I be looking for in particular when test driving one. I have a $5000 in cash. I want to buy a RELIABLE and PRACTICAL car. I had a luxury vehicle prior to this and I really dont care for the payment and I had a terrible experience with any beater cars that I bought. I had a 2001 camry as a rental car for two weeks and absolutely loved it. If any of you owned one or currently own one then please share your experience with me as this will greatly effect my decision for the purchase of this car as I am planning on keeping it for about 3-5 years.

ABSOLUTELY YES. The Camry 97-2001 is an excellent deal since they have the OBD2 diagnostic and the all-electronic ignition, unlike the previous models. After 100,000 the T-belt must be changed, and in the mean time the water pump and the oil pump gasket. It is better to find a car cheaper and do this repair (~ $ 1,000) so that you are sure the oil pump gasket and the water pump are changed. Do not be misleaded by adds saying "T-belt changed".
