Sounds more like spark knock. From using cheap gas or having carbon build up in the cylinders.Valves and timing chains don't know the difference of being under load or not.
Here's something that you can try first. Go buy a bottle of Chevron Techron or Sea-foam.
And pour the whole bottle in the gas tank and fill it with a quality gas. BP ,Chevron Sonoco ,Phillips 66 and run the tank almost empty before filling again. And see if that don't help , if helps may have to repeat the first time and then corrects it do it 3 or 4 times a year............&&&
