In the quest for better gas mileage and lower emissions, in the late 1990's many manufacturers produced hot running engines. These engines would break down oil to form sludge and could fail due to inadequate lubrication, this seemed to happen no matter how often you changed the oil. The only cure was to use a fully synthetic oil. (synthetic oil can withstand much higher temperatures, it has a higher flash point as compared to conventional mineral based motor oil) Known sludge engines were: 3.3 Toyota, 2.7 Chrysler, 1.8 T VW
