Default I drive a 2002 Toyota Corolla and there is a tapping and grinding noise in the engine.
What could that be?

Check the oil inside the engine it may need oil or the lifter could be going back.

Bad valve lifters for the tapping but the grinding is usually a bad bearing. Guess Toyota doesn't really last forever or even long like we have tried to tell ya.































Go buy a Ford.

I would suspect issues with the hydraulic cam chain tensioner which also controls the valve timing.

Sounds like engine is thirsting for oil. Valves tapping and rod bearing noise (a.k.a. grind) is good sign. If it's not low on oil, check the oil pump.

there are trolls who are on a personal crusade against toyota. so you have to look passed those ppl. statistically they are one of the most reliable vehicles on the road.
