Toyoya Yaris D4D engine problem ?

I have a 2009 Yaris D4D. I have had to top it up with 5 litres of oil over 12 months, after just 20,000 miles. Also, at random intervals, for no apparent reason, there is a big cloud of blue smoke, with an accompanying burning smell, from the exhaust. Again randomly, it starts to chug like an old bus as if it is about to stall but doesn't (cold or wamr engine, no difference) The dealer doesn't think there is a problem with the oil consumption and at the 20K service said "the filters were s bit dirty" but the problems are still there.















Is there a Toyota expert on here who can suggest what could be worng and what I can do next?

The Tank

If you are lucky it's the EGR. These engines have an exhaust gas recycle (EGR) valve which is located in the very awkward space between the turbocharger and bulkhead. If you look from underneath you'll see a branch from the exhaust pipe that leads up to the turbo; the valve is near the top.































After about 30,000 miles (and periodically after that) this valve tends to clog with 'soot'. It can happen sooner if you've been running on cheap 'supermarket' fuel or not giving the engine a good 'blast' occasionally (short runs are bad for a diesel).















This prevents the required sample of exhaust from entering the air intake system and this messes up the mixture from the 'ideal' which the Engine Management System expects. The result is lumpy idling and poor fuel consumption.















Cleaning it is about 30 mins work for a dealer, or 2 hours for a DIY with Haynes manual.































For these engines 5 litres of oil consumed in 12 months is too high unless you do over 30k miles. Clean around everywhere and look for a leak.































In worse case scenario you have a busted piston ring and that will explain the bad running and the oil consumption. You will need a compression test to diagnose this properly. Cost to fix will be several £hundred.
