I'd put in a Cummins 4BT, google it its one bulletproof engine. Can also put down some serious torque and hp numbers, if you're into that. As for prices they are anywhere for $1000-$2000 depending on condition and/or mods to it. I had a buddy that put one in his FJ40, did all the work himself, took about a year to get it all buttoned up. To pay a shop to do all the labor would be ridiculous expensive, but if money is not a concern go for it. Other things you'll need is a tranny, if you're looking for gas mileage go with a NV4500 5 speed with a Gear Vendors Overdrive, which makes it an 8 Speed. And you'll need new motor mounts, fuel delivery source, might have to re-gear the axle, get rid of the factory wiring harness, re-enforce the frame to take the new weight, you name it you'll probably have to replace it or modify it.
Hope this helps.
