I don't know about Ford - but i know a little about Toyota. The teams are usually 6 people with a team leader. the team leader may "work" (on the assembly line) 4 hours of an 8 hour shift. The team leader with consensus of the members will distribute the work load to the members. The other 4 hours he/she should be training the team members - rotating their assignments, and making sure all the tools are calibrated. If a team member is absent - the other team members have to work extra to cover for the missing person, a few absences in balance will be taken care of - but a team member who abuses the absentee quota will be replaced. Everyone tends to pull together.
