gear selection should be as follows
1st, 2nd, drive, then overdrive switch, then "engine lockup at about 77KPH(46-47MPH)
so its a 4stage auto with "lockup"
lockup = gearbox turns at same speed as engine
MPG figures are usually based on a vehicle with one person(driver) covering a distance at a speed. NOT always at highway speed. 26-28 MPG should be easily gained thru carefull driving, reading the road ahead, the biggest killer of MPG is your brakes! everytime you use your brakes, you use more gas coming back to the speed you want. With careful "reading" of the road ahead, and what traffic is doing, you can cut down how often you use your brakes.... >phew!< thus saving fuel
PS A well tuned and well serviced vehicle will always help to get the best MPG
