you would only use the lower gears when towing a heavy load. Sometimes going up a hill towing a heavy trailer it is advisable to manually change down to 3rd or even 2nd gear and limit the gear changing. When going down a steep slope and you want to limit the speed of the vehicle then manually change down into 2nd or 3rd. Then vehicle will only go as fast as the gearbox allows the engine to turn. Very steep slopes may call for use of 1st gear low range; basically the car will idle down the slope and you can keep better control of the rate of descent. hope this helps.
