I have a 1990 toyota truck. Never gives me trouble and has over 2 hundred thousand miles on it. I also had a 1977 ford thunderbird that I sold in great condition that had 262,000 miles on it. So it may be that your maintaince habits need to be addressed. If you do not feel I am right then good luck on keeping a vehicle in good working order.

Heavy Black smoke is an over rich condition. My guess would be a bad coolant temp sensor or a problem with fuel metering. If you do not have a engine light on you will need to have a shop check it out.

It is almost certain there is a failure code logged and you can scan to see what's wrong. Get it fixed or MORE problems will be the result, one of which will be a ruined catalytic converter. (expensive)
