grey smoke and or a glowing cat is a rich condition.
black smoke is carbon being pushed out. not *necessarily* from a rich condition.

IMO,
you have carbon build up. 9 times outta 10 it's due to a lack of a tune up over time.
either way, u gotta start with a good base line b4 u can really see if there are any actual issue(s) here.
need to do a *FULL* tune up. complete tuneup. oil, air & oil filters, plugs, cap/wires, and rotor.
then u gotta get all that carbon outta there.
do a seafoam treatment. they have DIYs,
http://www.seafoamsales.com/sea-foam-spray.html
use it to clean your IAC/MAPorMAF, air box and ducting, and your one o2 sensor(just forward of the cat).
then use this to clean your fuel system and injectors,
http://www.seafoamsales.com/motor-treatment.html
you should actually pull those injectors and clean 'em. but don't forget to replace the o-rings.
then see what issues you have.
700 @ idle is about right. maybe 750-800 with an auto trans.
here's a link to a FREE online manual for your vehicle,
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/
just sign up, plug in your vehicle info, and go to "repair info"
good luck.....
