The problem is that the wrong fluid will corrode some of the metals and possibly the seals. It will damage the transaxle, and if the seals go possibly other components. I don't understand why you wouldn't want to use the recommended WS fluid.
And the same goes for the coolant when you change that. The wrong anti-freeze will corrode the cooling system.
It is rarely safe to interchange fluids, and that especially goes for lubricants. The transaxle in the Prius is not a CVT, it is an unusual differential. In general, using a different lubricant means poor lubrication, which leads to early failure.
