How do I set the ignition timing on 94 toyota pickup?

I have a 1994 Toyota 2.4L 22RE 4Wd pickup.

I know I have to jump the 2 terminals in the diagnostic box, and I know how to use my timing light, but I am not sure of:

1. Does the engine need to be at normal operating temp during the test?

2. How do tell what the RPMs are with out a tach?

3. Is there any way to use a regular digital multimeter to read the RPMs? I heard something about having the meter on hertz, then multiply the reading by 60, but i am not sure where to put the ground electrode.

Get a cheap clip-on tach and Chilton's manual at the car part store. The engine does need to be warmed up when you set the ignition timing.

IG-terminal in the "check connector" box is the pin you're looking for.

warm. so no choke circuit is on skewing the idle.

gotta know how many pulses per cam revolution x2 to get the crank rpm. then convert the frequency to rpm. then you some how adjust the TPS to set it. something like that.

suppose that's a way to cheat the book as it say's non adjustable idle.

5 degrees b4. must advance to 10 w/o the jumpers. if not, there's an ecu issue. or it's getting fed incorrect info.

is all this due to prior maint? you move the distributor?. if not, and you didn't do a t-chain, even after a tune up, the timing wouldn't have changed. timing never changes unless you disturbed the distributor housing or t-chain.
