I had a 97 that burned oil, but you just had to keep an eye on it and top it up when needed.
There are many that don't burn oil. Here a good way to check:
Take the car for a test drive and when you are going down a long hill don't hit the gas at all (but leave the car in gear). When you get to the bottom of the hill, hit the gas hard and look behind you. If there's a problem with oil burning you should see a big puff of smoke behind you (at least that's my experience).
