...oil consumption?o? I was looking at 98-2002 models, but there seems to be an issue with higher mileage corollas and oil consumption, usually meaning an engine rebuild.

Is this problem common? or is this rare?

What's my best bet on a used corolla?

should I go newer or older?

I had a 97 that burned oil, but you just had to keep an eye on it and top it up when needed.

There are many that don't burn oil. Here a good way to check:

Take the car for a test drive and when you are going down a long hill don't hit the gas at all (but leave the car in gear). When you get to the bottom of the hill, hit the gas hard and look behind you. If there's a problem with oil burning you should see a big puff of smoke behind you (at least that's my experience).

Generally you can alleviate most smaller blowby problems by reducing crankcase pressure (changing the pcv or possibly using an external oil cooler setup).

Is blowby common on old yotas? I've heard of it but it's generally a high mileage problem; maybe 150k+. Since most of these cars aren't really taken care of with recommended maintenance I don't consider it much of an issue. Your best bet is to get a modern corolla with low miles...but in your price range you're looking at a car that's going to have some issues; the only thing you can do is find out what those problems are and whether they are beyond a point you can deal with.

Throwing an extra quart in the crankcase every 2 weeks isn't a major issue to most people; dino costs around 1.50 a quart at retail sometimes cheaper if you can find it on clearance at target or possibly supertech at walmart.
