I drain the ATF transmission fluid every 30,000 miles on the 5 Toyotas we have owned from brand new. What I have and use is Craftsman Hex Bit 10mm socket which yes, is essentially an 10mm Allen wrench...however, the 10mm head fits snugly and using a ratchet there is more leverage so it is easier to remove.
FYI before I bought this Craftsman Hex Bit metric socket set, I did use a good set of Allen wrenches but what happen was the head was not securedly fit one time and it stripped the insides of the Toyota transmission plug so I had to pay my mechanic remove the ATF plug as well as purchase a brand new plug from the local Toyota dealer parts department.
