The more recent Land Cruisers in the US (the 100 and 200 series) have really gone for the extravagant luxury market with lots of comfort features and showy technology. Although they are well-made, they have been following a trend of upscaling and are targeted more and more toward the elite 4wd enthusiast and have quite steep MSRP and resale value. Even the basic 70-series Cruisers sold overseas have pricetags north of $40,000.
Many Cruiser affecionados have been turning their attention to the 80 series in the used market, especially the '93-'97 FZJ 80's with the more powerful 4.5 liter inline 6. They are very capable, plenty comfortable, have the desirable solid front axle and can be found for under $10,000.
The FJ-cruiser and 4Runner are excellent alternatives for capable but more spartan platforms.
