Certainly. The auto parts store filters have been getting very high-quality and are hard to tell from the factory filters. I've been using parts store filters that I think are store-brand, but have really nice black rubber surrounds and nice, thick gauze mesh.
I used a K&N on my 4wd for a while and I swapped it out. It seemed to be letting much more grit into the engine than the regular parts-store filters. The oil got dirty much faster, and I couldn't feel a power difference.
