Why is the 1986 Corolla's called AE 86? and 1990's Civics called EK9?

Default Why is the 1986 Corolla's called AE 86? and 1990's Civics called EK9?
Along with like other cars like the s13? Where do they come up with the letters to use and the numbers? Is it part of the model number of the car?

It's the model number. like the S13, you will notice that the next variant to come out was the S14, and the one after is the S15. As far as Hondas, the EG came before the EK and so on.















It's a factory code denoting the make and model of the car, and which body style it is.
