Because certain models just don't come to the U.S. For example, i live in Puerto rico and here's i few cars the don't come in the U.S. that are here in P.R.==== 1995 toyota corolla Hatchback, Mitsubishi nativa, 1986 toyota corolla hatchback twin cam, mazda 3 dx edition, etc, simple, not all models are imported to U.S. but yes toyota had plenty of hatchbacks since the early 70's, starting with corolla, corona, and starlet.
