2001 Toyota RAV4 is getting bad gas mileage.?

Default 2001 Toyota RAV4 is getting bad gas mileage.?
It has the 2.0l inline four, automatic transmission and all time four wheel drive. About 178k well maintained highway miles.































EPA estimates are 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.































I get about 21 mpg in the city, but I only get about 20 mpg on the highway. I don't drive it super hard to get that poor of mileage. When I'm cruising at about 70mph it's revving around 3k rpms.































Something wrong here? It's not tire pressure or dirty filter or anything like that. Thanks!















These are long cruises on the highway so that's why it doesn't make sense.































How can I get better mileage in the city than highway? Why's it revving so high? Is it stuck in 3rd gear? seems like if it was a tuneup then it would get bad city mileage too.

Well if it aint a dirty filter, Or low tire PSI, Then I would hazard a guess that with 178k miles the 7mpg drop is due to age and wearing of the engine etc. Nothing too bad. Get the car fully serviced and see if that does it.















You might just be accelerating quick to 70mph or not driving long enough to get the reccomended mpg? Short journeys do not allow the engine to warm up etc to reach its optimum.

Whens the last time you had a major tune up done to the vehicle? Maybe should get that done if it hasnt been done already. Getting any CEL's?

At 178k miles with all-time 4 wheel drive, your drive train has gotta need a good greasin'. Change you differential fluids too.































Also, was there a strong headwind during your mileage test? You say it's revving higher than normal and getting stuck in third gear?? Have a good listen and count the gear changes. At 70 mph, your RAV4 auto tranny should be in fourth. (Do they even have a fifth in the auto?) If thats the case, have a TRUSTED mechanic take a look at the transmission. Maybe your RAV4 is not going into "over-drive".
