- the freaky thing is i live in a small very conservative rural town
Although there is a bunch of FUD out there that the Prius is only driven by liberals, in fact about half of the Yahoo Prius group members are conservative. I think of the Prius as the "thinking person's car" because there are intelligent people on both sides of the isle.
- any reason as to why
The Prius has been sold in the U.S. since the 2001 model year. They have proved to be very reliable so almost all are still on the road. More than one million have been sold in the U.S. so far.

In addition, the new Honda Insight looks almost identical to the Prius (except smaller) and many people mistake one for the other.
- if this is happening anywhere else
Almost everywhere. The Prius really is a great car. I have both a 2001 that my wife drives and a 2004 that I drive. The 2004 has over 120,000 miles on it and has been trouble-free. It has cost 12 cents per mile for dealer maintenance, tires, and fuel combined. The 2001 has over 85,000 miles and has also been trouble-free but my wife doesn't keep a logbook so I don't have the exact numbers. Based on the number of times it's been serviced they appear to be similar.
2004 Prius MPG from the logbook. (Complete years only):
2003-2004 -- 50.8 mpg 17,628 miles
2005 -- 52.6 mpg 14,688 miles
2006 -- 56.3 mpg 16174 miles
2007 -- 57.3 mpg 18384 miles
2008 -- 59.9 mpg 21755 miles
2009 -- 61.4 mpg 16177 miles
2010 -- 65.2 mpg 12134 miles
