It will rev up, but what won't catch? Do you mean that the engine stalls out if you try to let it idle? Do you mean that the engine runs fine, but when you put the car in gear the car will not move? If the car won't move in gear your clutch is worn out and needs replacing. If the engine dies unless you rev it, there could be a variety of problems. That car has OBD 1 and Chilton's Auto Repair manual will tell you how to get the trouble codes out of the computer so the car tells you what its problem is. Chiltons is at the public library unless you want to buy one- not a bad thing to have.
Shake up the fuel filter and try the car again. If the filter was clogged up, shaking might temporarily unclog it and make the car run OK fow a little while. Replace the filter.
