AE86's (hachiroku's) meaning 86 in Japanese were offered from 1983 to late 1986 (sometimes considered an 1987 model). The AE85 (SR5 version) was basically the same as the 86's, but had the lesser horsepower 3AU engine. Single cam, carb. (Generally a good source of body panels for the damaged AE86's)
The AE86 was the 130-ish HP twin cam version (Corolla GTS) in the US and Puerto Rico.
Both models were available in hatchback or notchback during all years. Levin or Trueno.
The AE86 also came in three different forms..
GT Standard version
GTV Slighly more aggressive computer settings, and generally more sought for drifting
APEX Usually had the sunroof, digital dash..all the bells and whistles
In addition, some of the 86's of all years had "Koki" body parts. The tail lights were different..corner lamps on the front bumper, and I believe the interior was a little nicer. Also, a front grill that would open up. Some had a clear lens that housed the foglamps in the grill.
For example, some of the later FWD versions (AE92) had "Koki" engines which were a popular swap into 86's. Thicker crankshafts, higher comp. pistons, and more HP.
The mods done to most of these cars made it difficult to tell what year they were unless they had tell tale factory stickers still on them, but I believe the Initial D was a 1986.
