The Toyota trucks are about the same from 1989 to the first part of 1995. They are stoutly-built and reliable but the engines are not overly powerful. The 22re 4-cylinder is the preferred engine for these years of truck--the 3.0 v-6 had some head gasket issues and doesn't produce much more power for the extra fuel consumption. The 22re is also low-maintenance. It has a timing chain instead of a belt and uses simple, proven construction.
In the second half of 1995, the Tacoma was introduced. It's not as heavy-duty as the earlier trucks but it has more powerful engines and a softer ride. It also has a completely different interior and quite a few changes to the exterior. They have also been very reliable.
