Is it possible that the idle speed is just too low? You can try increasing it a little by unscrewing the large, flat-blade screw head near the front-top of the throttle body a few turns. If the timing was changed, it can reduce the idle speed. Use a timing light to make sure it's at about 5-8 degrees BTDC with the timing connector shorted (little round yellow one near the driver's side fender under the hood). I'd start with the simple things.
If the distributor slot doesn't give you enough adjustment to get the ignition timing in spec, it's possible that the distributor gear is off a tooth.
