as a DD my advice is to get one with the 3VZE V6. the 22R/RE I4 engines have issues maintaining 60 mph due to being a very long stroke engine.
the I4 22 engine is at it's best 4x4ing. it has plenty of torque, less weight, and lower center of gravity.
neither one will get you better than 17/25.
if you include the 90 truck, you can go all the way to 95.5. all OBDI. same platform. easy trouble shooting and repair.
FYI,
the V6 had issues with the head gaskets early on when the asbestos ban came into effect. there was a recall, and most are already dealt with. recalls follow the vehicle, not the owner. so have the VIN handy and check with toy.
another issue that still plagues the V6 is the routing of the rt exhaust pipe over the bell housing to meet the lt. this *can* cook the head gasket, valve guide seals, and any hoses and valves back there.
that said, these issues have been addressed by toy. still, some cases do crop up from time to time.
the 22 prior to 85 had serious t-gear issues. so 85 and up is good. if you don't have to do hwy speeds, the 85 with 22 engine is the way to go. first year of the long deck engine and last year for SAS. you'll be the best weekend warrior out 4x4ing. after 85 all went to IFS front suspension. limited ability.
owner 93 toy pu 3VZE V6 4x4 200,000+ miles-no issues, 88 toy pu 22/20/RE hybrid 4x4.
