toyota has long been known for the 22R 4 cylinder engine it got great gas mileage, and for a inline 4 cylinder had excellent power, but it had no torque until you got above 2000 rpm then it had all the power you could want. It was extremely durable, dependable, the only problem it had was somewhere in the 120 to 140,000 mile range it would sometimes blow a head gasket. But it would leak oil for a long time before that, so smart people fixed the head gasket and went on down the road, the 6 cylinder has more power, but much less gas mileage so for those who prefer more power the 6 cylinder was an option. But the 4 banger would run you up and down the steepest hill no problem and overall was a much better and longer lasting the the 6
