Geez... an 84 Toyo Caressida you say ....?
It's got a carburetor so, also keep in mind that it could be that little beastie causing the gas smell.
Carbs are pretty touchy, finicky things to deal with and you got one that's almost 30 years old and ( unless I'm mistaken) It's been a long time since it's been rebuilt.
I'm not saying that it IS your problem; I'm saying that; the combination of hot weather, a carb and strong gas smells are pretty common.
