What could be causing a humming noise in a 2007 Camry?

The humming noise is most noticeable during idle, and the pitch increases with acceleration. It's sounds as if you're blowing over the top of an open soda bottle. My neighbor described it as a hollow sound. The sound appears to be coming from the engine area. When the fan comes on the car idles up and the hum pitch increases. When the fan goes off, the car idles back down and so does the pitch of the hum. Any suggestions on what could be causing this noise? It just started today.

The fan is causing it, you answered it yourself.

It could be the fanbelt that is loose or old, that could be causing the humming and would result from the following issues you described.

You're going to have to snoop this one out: Get a plastic or rubber hose you can put one end of in your ear and the other end you can aim at suspect parts. This will work like a stethosscope. You'll point right at the source and hear it better when you find the problem. Listen all around the air intake apparatus and make sure the air filter box lid is on straight and that the intake pipes aren't cracked.
