the best way to answer this is for you to go to carcomplaints.com and do some research and see which celica had the least complaints. If you want one with some zip, find out which models have the double overhead cam with four valves per cylinder and dual plugs. It runs only on supreme I think, but is a butt kicker, also the four banger with a turbo was a rocket too.

Both years are basically the same car. There is very little differences other then the extra bodywork option on special edition models in later years

Early models did have some issues with piston rings and burned some oil if abused.

The GTS models had VVTI (variable valve timing), revved way higher and had a 6 speed gearbox. Basically they went like stink if you were willing to rev the engine up to 12000 RPM.

Some of the early gts gearboxes were simply too easy to shift into the wrong gear (really nice shifter!!) and many "stupid" drivers blew up the engine (over revved it) by jamming it in 2nd gear while slowing down.
