Having ac problems with toyota?

Just had my 89 Toyota Camry filled with R12 freon. Its starts working but keeps freezing up, no matter if its outside air or recirc air. My 'mechanic' said the compressor was fine, and told me to try adding a lil heat with the air. It works a little longer, but its STILL FREEZING UP!! HELP!!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS???

Which tells me that you aren't going to an actual mechanic.

Take it to Toyota, get it fixed.

The expansion valve is stuck open, this is what normally regulates flow of R12 away from the evaporator coil when it gets too cold. Have that liquid gold taken back out and get the valve replaced.

I'm pretty sure your Corolla has an expansion valve system in which the evaporator temperature is regulated by the thermostat. Orifice systems run full tilt and the temperature is controlled by the amount of heat added after the evaporator while expansion valve systems cycle the compressor to produce the desired temperature. Raising the temperature control on the dash should cause the compressor to cut out at a higher temperature but that does not seem to be happening. Because the system is still freezing up the compressor must not be cutting out when the temperature of the evaporator gets into the low 30s.

I have to ask, though - are you sure the evaporator is freezing up rather than failing to cool for another reason? If the suction pipe is very cold when the air conditioner gets weak that is a good indicator of freezing, but very low low-side pressure can also be trouble with the expansion valve.

In any case, this appears to be beyond your mechanic's HVAC expertise. It's probably time to take it to an auto A/C specialist.
