88 toyota celica over heats bad.?

I have an 88 Toyota celica that I have replace the thermostat in and it still over heats, The heater still works and its not leaking any fluids, I use the heater to keep it cooler when I drive and when I am going down hill or at a higher speed I can coast and it cools down but the first time I noticed it I checked the reservoir and it was boiling, I have then since replaced the thermostat and nothing has changed. Any suggestions?

Has your car ever ran out of coolant before? If so you might have a blown headgasket. Check your oil and make sure there isnt any coolant mixed with the oil.

The radiator may be inefficient due it rusting over so many years. Some "passage" in the radiator may have narrowed or even stuck due to long term collection of rust and dirt. You can remove the hoses at both end of the radiator and use a water hose to pump in water at one side. See if there is any "rusty" water coming out from the lower side. After the water is clear, connect back the hoses and fill the radiator with water and the correct amount of coolant. Hope it may help.

if the res is boiling you have a head (gasket/cracked or warped head) or water pump issue. since the t-stat is new and the correct app.

FYI,

the above can exist w/o cross contamination of fluids. there is a test kit that can be had at any auto store to test for combustion gasses in the rad coolant.

since liquids are thicker than gasses, in the early stages, it may not *actually* consume water. pushing it out via boiling from hot gasses into the water jacket is what happens first.
